Job summary

The Chief Engineer will be responsible for the overall management of the engineering department and ensuring the optimal performance of the hotel's infrastructure. This role involves maintaining the highest standards of guest satisfaction by ensuring all facilities are in excellent condition, planning and implementing maintenance programs, and managing a team of skilled professionals.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Management:
    • Conduct daily morning meetings with the General Manager to discuss ongoing projects, issues, and plans.
    • Lead, manage, and motivate the engineering team to achieve departmental goals.
    • Prepare and present weekly and monthly operational and maintenance reports to senior management.
  • Facility Operation and Maintenance:
    • Oversee the daily operations and maintenance of the hotel's physical assets, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other systems.
    • Implement preventive maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and ensure longevity of equipment.
    • Conduct periodic inspections of the property to assess and address any maintenance needs.
  • Budget and Financial Management:
    • Prepare the annual maintenance budget and manage expenses within the approved budget.
    • Monitor actual expenses, analyze variances, and implement corrective actions to ensure budget compliance.
    • Develop and implement energy-saving and cost-reduction initiatives, preparing relevant reports for management review.
  • Compliance and Safety:
    • Ensure all engineering activities comply with local regulations and hotel policies, including health and safety standards.
    • Liaise with government authorities (e.g., BOMBA, DOSH, Suruhanjaya Tenaga) to secure necessary licenses and permits.
    • Participate in the hotel's Emergency Response Team (ERT) and lead fire safety initiatives.
  • Project Management:
    • Coordinate with outside contractors for installation and repair works, ensuring minimal disruption to hotel operations.
    • Consult and negotiate with clients and stakeholders to finalize engineering project specifications.
    • Manage the renewal of service contracts and agreements, liaising with service providers as needed.
  • Guest and Resident Relations:
    • Address and resolve maintenance-related guest complaints promptly and effectively.
    • Cooperate with Joint Management Body (JMB) on activities such as utility monitoring, contract renewals, and event venue rental.
  • Inventory and Work Order Management:
    • Establish and maintain proper work performance records, inventory controls, and work order procedures.
    • Allocate work assignments effectively to ensure timely and efficient completion of tasks.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Stay updated with industry trends and advancements in engineering practices.
    • Implement innovative solutions to enhance the hotel's operational efficiency and guest satisfaction.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil) or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in engineering management, preferably in the hospitality industry.
  • Proven track record in managing large-scale facilities and leading engineering teams.
  • Strong knowledge of building systems, maintenance procedures, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
